Discover the HeroRATs of APOPO in Siem Reap

In Siem Reap, amidst the stunning temples and rich history, lies a unique and impactful organization: the APOPO Visitor Center. APOPO, which stands for Anti-Personnel Landmines Removal Product Development, is dedicated to saving lives by training African giant pouched rats, affectionately known as HeroRATs, to detect landmines and tuberculosis.

The Incredible Work of HeroRATs

These remarkable rats possess an extraordinary sense of smell and are trained to sniff out TNT, the explosive found in landmines. Their small size and agility allow them to navigate minefields safely, and they can clear an area much faster and more efficiently than traditional methods. In fact, a HeroRAT can scan an area the size of a tennis court in just 30 minutes, a task that would take a human team several days.

A visit to the APOPO Visitor Center is an eye-opening and inspiring experience. You'll learn about the devastating impact of landmines in Cambodia and other countries, and witness firsthand the incredible work of the HeroRATs.

The center offers demonstrations of the rats' detection skills, allowing you to see these amazing creatures in action.

You'll also have the opportunity to meet and even hold a HeroRAT, challenging any preconceived notions you might have about rats.

More Than Just Landmine Detection

APOPO's work extends beyond landmine detection. They are also involved in tuberculosis detection programs and are exploring the use of HeroRATs in search and rescue operations.

Supporting APOPO By visiting the APOPO Visitor Center, you're not only gaining valuable knowledge but also supporting their vital mission. Your visit helps fund their ongoing efforts to clear landmines, save lives, and create safer communities.
