But not just any rats—these are the APOPO HeroRATs, and they’re saving lives every single day.

When I arrived at the APOPO Visitor Center near Phnom Penh, I thought it would be a quick stop. Maybe an hour, a few photos, and I’d move on. Instead, I left completely changed, with a whole new respect for these tiny, intelligent creatures.

Meeting the HeroRATs

The first thing you notice is how calm everything feels. The trainers move slowly, speaking softly, and then out comes a HeroRAT—small, alert, and surprisingly adorable.

These African giant pouched rats are trained to detect landmines and tuberculosis. Yes, landmines.

Cambodia still has millions of unexploded landmines buried beneath its soil, a tragic reminder of past conflicts. What shocked me most is how something so small can play such a massive role in solving such a dangerous problem.

The rats are light enough that they don’t trigger the mines, and they can cover an area much faster than humans with metal detectors. Watching them work is honestly mesmerizing—focused, efficient, and almost playful.

Watching a Live Demonstration

I got to see a live demo, and it felt like watching a real-life superhero in action.

The rat moved across a grid, sniffing carefully. When it detected explosives, it scratched the ground—its signal. Within minutes, it had covered an area that would take a human hours.
